WHO NEEDS AN EYE EXAM? by Dr. Martha Jay, Eye Physician & Surgeon, Milwaukee, Wisconsin

It’s happened again.  Someone has come in with severe glaucoma that could have been easily treated if caught earlier.  In this day and age, it’s really a shame to have people loose vision because they did not take the time to have their eyes examined every couple of years.

Glaucoma is not painful.  You really don’t know you have it until it is quite severe and then treatment not very effective.  It is caused by an increase in eye pressure which damages the delicate optic nerve in the back of the eye that carries visual information to the brain.  Glaucoma is diagnosed by measuring your eye pressure, looking directly at the optic nerve after dilating drops have been given and checking your peripheral or side vision of one of the other two factors are abnormal.  It is treated with eye drops but sometimes lasers or surgery are necessary to get it under control.

Besides glaucoma, another reason for regular eye care is to be sure that medical conditions such as diabetes or high blood pressure have not affected your eyes.  And finally, we all want to see as well as possible so your glasses prescription needs to be up-dated every few years.

Is an eye exam on your 2011 “To Do” list?  Give us a call to arrange a complete medical evaluation of your eyes.  While you are at it, ask if blade-free iLASIK is an option for you.  If you have cataracts, ask about our bifocal implants or those that correct for astigmatism.
