How long does the procedure take?

VISX

Martha F. Jay, Ph.D., M.D.

You are in the LASIK suite about 20 minutes but each laser runs just a few seconds.  The IntraLase laser used to make the tiny corneal flaps runs 21 seconds per eye.  The VISX laser duration depends on your glasses prescription but is usually less than a minute.  Most of the time is spent getting your oriented and preparing your eyes for the procedure.

You are at the laser center for 1-2 hours.  When you first get there you are given the oral valium and the WaveScan is run.  We also take that time to explain your post-operative care so you can go right home after your procedure.  Your driver has a comfortable area to enjoy coffee and other snacks until you are ready to leave.
